Corporate directors and CEOs to forego pay hike this year: Bharti Airtel

Close on the heels of Bharti Airtel chief Sunil Mittal foregoing any pay hike this fiscal, the company on Wednesday said all its corporate directors and CEOs have volunteered for no salary hike in 2011-12.

“This is in line with the company`s efforts to drive cost efficiencies,” the telecom giant said in a statement.

BSNL, MTNL paid Rs 1,134 crore as rent in last 4 years

The government on Wednesday said two state-run telecos BSNL and MTNL have collectively paid Rs 1,132.06 crore in the last four years as rent for the buildings they have hired for technical and administrative offices.

MTNL has paid a total of Rs 108.16 crore since 2008 and BSNL has paid Rs 1,023.9 crore during the same period, Minister ! of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora informed the Lok Sabha.

Bharti Airtel Ltd, India`s top mobile phone carrier, on Wednesday reported a 28 percent fall in profit for the quarter ended June 30, hit by interest costs related to its purchase of African operations, costs of its new third-generation network in India and higher tax outgo.

Huawei’s new TD-LTE stick may give green signal to Wireless Broadband roll-out in India

Huawei, World’s second largest mobile network equipment provider, has just launched a data-card product that may turn out to be crucial to the roll-out of wireless broadband in India by players like Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries.

The data-card is the World’s first such device to support a host of technologies, including TD-LTE — seen as the most likely technology to be deployed by most of the Indian wireless broadband spectrum holders.

Bharti Airtel hikes call tariffs by 20% in six circles

Leading telecom service provider Bharti Airtel on Friday hiked call tariffs by 20% in six major circles including New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The hike in tariff will be passed on to pre-paid customers as well.

Tariffs have been hiked from 1 paise per second to 1.2 paisa per second. Sources say that other telecom players will follow suit. Bharti Airtel stock price rallied by 4% and was trading at Rs 411 at 2:50 PM on the BSE.

Airtel 3G services in eastern UP

Private GSM operator Bharti Airtel today launched its third Generation (3G) services in Uttar Pradesh (East) circle.

In the first phase, 3G services have been launched in Lucknow and Kanpur. Airtel has set up 20 experience zones for people to test the new service. In another 15 days, the telecom major intends to cover ! 8-10 major towns.

Airtel had already launched its 3G services in UP (West) circle, which covers Uttarakhand as well.

Airtel, Vodafone added 2.45 mn subscribers each in May

Telecom giants Bharti Airtel and Vodafone added 2.45 million subscribers each in May, industry data showed. The month saw a net addition of 9.53 million GSM subscribers in the country.

The total number of GSM subscribers in India crossed 590.2 million in May as against 580.67 million in April, according to the data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

Bharti Airtel now has a market share of 28.31 percent, with 167 million subscribers. Vodafone follows with a 23.62 percent  [read more →]

Bharti takes tower sharing to Africa

Bharti Airtel, which acquired Zain Telecom’s assets in 16 African countries last year, has started discussions with all its key competitors on the continent – including MTN, Vodacom, Orange, Millicom and Etisalat – for sharing tower infrastructure and back-end optic fibre networks. The idea is to reduce capital investments and improve profitability.
