Airtel commences 3G services in J&K

Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Wednesday commenced 3G services in Jammu and Kashmir , starting with the summer capital Srinagar.

“Powered by 160 sites in Srinagar alone, Airtel 3G services will gradually be launched across the state in weeks to come,” Chief Executive Officer, Upper North, Mobile service, Shashi Arora told reporters.

Bharti Airtel launches mobile wallet service in Delhi NCR

Bharti Airtel, India`s largest telco by revenues and subscribers, launched its mobile wallet service Airtel Money in Delhi NCR on Wednesday, a company official said.

The service allows Airtel customers to make cashless payments from Rs 10 to Rs 5,000 a day for various services such as utility bills and movie tickets. The telco plans to raise the upper threshold to Rs 50,000 within two months, Airtel`s m-commerce services chief operating officer Sriram Jagannathan told! ET.

Bharti Airtel inks $400-m pact with Huawei

Bharti Airtel has signed a $400-million deal with Chinese vendor Huawei to modernize and expand Airtel`s mobile network infrastructure in Africa.

According to the agreement, Huawei will be responsible for designing, planning as well as managing operations and maintenance.

Ericsson and Nokia Siemens are also likely to get similar deals.

Bharti drills legal loopholes in TRAI`s IUC consultation paper

Telecom major Bharti airtel has opposed the consultation paper issued by regulator Trai to review interconnection usage charges (IUC), saying it is not being done in accordance with the directions of TDSAT and the Supreme Court and hence needs to be reframed.

“We are highly surprised to note that the consultation paper released by TRAI on April 27, 2011, has not taken into consideration the observations and directions of either the Supreme Court or the TDSAT,” the company said  [read more →]

Bharti to invest $3 b on telecom expansion

Bharti Group on Thursday said it plans to invest about $3 billion for expanding its telecom operations in this fiscal.

According to Mr Manik Jhangiani, Group CFO, Bharti Enterprises, the telecom company has earmarked $1.5 billion for its businesses in India and South-Asia and another $1 billion for Africa. Investments in the tower business have been pegged at $400 million.

African operations drag Airtel Q4 profit 31%

Losses from African operations and soaring costs have dragged down Bharti Airtel`s fourth quarter profits by 31 per cent to Rs 1,401 crore compared to Rs 2,044 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Telecom major Bharti airtel, whose profit has come under severe pressure in the fourth quarter of 2010-11 due to higher cost of African operations, today said it is expecting the African arm to post a much better performance this year.

Bharti Airtel plans to raise $1 b via bonds

Bharti Airtel, India`s top mobile phone carrier, plans to raise $750 million to $1 billion through a global bond issue to retire its costly Africa debt and fund expansion there, an official told ET.

The issue will be in the form of debentures and will have a tenure of 10 years, the official, who has direct knowledge of the development, said on condition of anonymity.

Airtel is planning to provide 3G services in 50 towns in Andhra Pradesh and 500 across the country during the current financial year and is making all arrangements towards that end, according to Mr Sharlin Thayil, Chief Executive Officer of Bharati Airtel in Andhra Pradesh.

India-US cable due by year-end

A forthcoming India-US cable link planned by Hong Kong-based Pacnet and India’s Bharti Airtel will be completed by year-end, a Pacnet executive says.

John Garrett, vice president of product strategy told the pair will spend a total of $120 million (€83 million) on acquiring capacity for the Chennai-Los Angeles link, which will be formed by linking portions of Pacnet’s EAC-C2C cable with Bharti’s i2i cable in Singapore.
