BSNL to rope in staff family members to boost sales

In bid to increase its revenues, state-run telecom major BSNL is launching a scheme under which family members of its 2.9 lakh employees can sell mobile recharge coupons as direct selling agents for a commission of 4.5 per cent, a senior company official said.

Even if the spouse or children of at least two lakh employees chose to become selling agents, it would result in a big boost to the company`s revenues, BSNL Coimbatore Principal General Manager N Haribabu told reporters  [read more →]

BSNL, MTNL paid Rs 1,134 crore as rent in last 4 years

The government on Wednesday said two state-run telecos BSNL and MTNL have collectively paid Rs 1,132.06 crore in the last four years as rent for the buildings they have hired for technical and administrative offices.

MTNL has paid a total of Rs 108.16 crore since 2008 and BSNL has paid Rs 1,023.9 crore during the same period, Minister ! of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora informed the Lok Sabha.

BSNL slashes ISD call rates for a category of consumers

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has reduced its ISD call rates for landline and mobile users using its Universal India Telephone Card (UITC), bought for above Rs 300.

Subscribers could make ISD calls at as low as 3 paisa per second to most countries throughout the world.

Similarly, call rates to France, Bahrain, Sweden and Pakistan, (which have a little higher call rate) have been also been reduced to 10 paisa per second for UITC users.

BSNL with ICTs provider Sai Infosystem launches voice and video telephony over IP in India

State-run BSNL along with Information and Communication Technologies ( ICTs )) provider Sai Infosystem on Monday launched their voice and video telephony over internet protocol to its customers.

Now any customer can make audio video calls at will on any landline, mobile or Internet Protocol phone anywhere in the world, provided that both the ends have requisite video phone equipment, BSNL said in a statement here.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) may have lost anything between a few hundred crores and several thousand crores since 2008 by not charg- ing other telcos for telephone messages or SMSes carried on its network.

BSNL links fund allocations to revenue targets

The management of cash-strapped Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has decided to link future fund allocations for all 24 circles to the realisation of specific revenue targets in financial year 2011-12.

In an internal communication, BSNL chairman & managing director RK Upadhayay has directed all circle heads to go on a revenue maximisation drive, failing which fund allocations will stand frozen.  Cash-strapped BSNL and the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) Administrator are on a collision course over the funding of mobile communications infrastructure in Naxalprone states across eastern, central and southern India as demanded by the home ministry.

A day after RCom protested disconnection of telecom services by BSNL, the Haryana circle of state-run telecom today said it has asked the Anil Ambani Group company to pay Rs 25 lakh as restoration charges to restore its telephone services in the state.

Bharti pays highest revenue at Rs 1,097 cr in March qtr: TRAI

The country`s largest private telecom operator Bharti Airtel has paid the highest amount of Rs 1,097.04 crore to the government in terms of license fee and spectrum usage charge for the quarter ended March 31.

Bharti paid Rs 708.6 crore as license fee and Rs 388.44 crore as the spectrum charge for the quarter ended March 31 of financial year 2010-11, data compiled by telecom regulator Trai said.

ITI wants to reduce revenue from BSNL and MTNL

ITI, the loss-making state-run telecom equipment manufacturer, is working out ways to reduce dependency on BSNL and MTNL, the largest customers of the company. This has been necessitated by a significant drop in the revenue contribution from these companies during the financial year 2010-11, K L Dhingra, CMD of ITI Ltd told Business Standard.
