Pitroda, Nilekani in panel on national broadband plan

The Government has set up a high level committee, including Mr Sam Pitroda and Mr Nandan Nilekani, to monitor the implementation of the National Optic Fiber Network (NOFN) project.

Under the project, the Government is looking to lay optic fibre cable network across the country to boost broadband uptake.

BSNL picks Huawei, 2 others to supply 10 lakh 3G data cards

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has finalised a contract to buy 10 lakh data cards for 3G services from three vendors. The deal, valued at Rs 120 crore, will be given to HFCL, Teracom and Chinese supplier Huawei.

BSNL had conducted online bidding for the first time to select the vendors.

While HFCL will supply 5.25 lakh 3G cards for Rs 61 crore, Teracom has bagged contract for 4.25 data cards at Rs 51 crore .

BWA Services to get 160 MHz of spectrum in 2012

Indicating further competition in the mobile broadband space soon, the government on Monday said 160 MHz of spectrum will be available next year for telecom operators for deploying broadband wireless access (BWA) services across the country.

Wimax roll-out plans by MTNL may be shelved

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) may shelve plans to roll out Wimax services on the broadband wireless access spectrum it was allotted two years ago after failing to find a franchise partner.

Instead of Wimax, the state-controlled telecom company is likely to opt for the rival TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) standard of wireless broadband technology, two of its officials said, requesting anonymity.

Wimax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) is a fourth-generation telecom technology primarily used for high-speed wireless Internet.

BSNL gets new chief

The government today appointed Rakesh Kumar Upadhyay as the chairman and managing director of state-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

“He (Upadhyay) will join office (of BSNL chief) today,” said R. Chandrashekhar, secretary at the department of telecom.

However, no decision on the appointment of the chief of MTNL, another public sector telecom entity, has been taken.

A search-cum-selection panel chose Upadhyay, the CMD of Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd, for the BSNL chief’s post.

TN Tele to charge BSNL for flouting norms

Taminadu Telecommunication (TTL), a two-way joint venture between Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidsco) and Telecommunications Consultants India (TCIL), is all set to drag Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) on a dispute over awarding optical fibre contr act (OFC) to higher bidders.

Government panel recommends merger of BSNL, MTNL and ITI

A government panel has recommend that state-owned telcoms company BSNL merge with its smaller sister concern MTNL as well as communications gear maker Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) as part of the erstwhile state monopoly`s attempts to turnaround its loss making operations and breathe new life into its businesses.

BSNL offers communication services in all regions of the country, except the metro cities of Mumbai and Delhi, where MTNL operates.

BSNL asking probe on BWA spectrum Allocation

An association of senior officials of BSNL has demanded a probe into the allocation of broadband spectrum to the company, saying that it is not standardised and is inferior to the one given to private telcos, despite having paid the same price.

In a letter to Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, Sanchar Nigam Executive`s Association (SNEA) has demanded that BSNL be give the same spectrum as the one allotted to private telecom companies, or its money be refunded.

BSNL offers free 2G, 3G sim to Cellone customers

To celebrate the Independence Day, BSNL-Rajasthan on Wednesday announced to provide free of cost sim card of 2G and 3G to its Cellone customers, an official said here.

The scheme would be opened till August 31, and any existing Cellone mobile user could get free of cost sim card after filing desired papers, BSNL-Rajasthan GM Marketing Sanjay Kumar said in a statement here.

BSNL launches push mail service

State owned telecom operator BSNL (Bhart Sanchar Nigam Limited) joined hands with Mobile applications and technology firm FIFTH C to offer BlacMail – “a push e-mail service” to its subscribers. According to Fifth C, a bangalore based company, BlacMail eliminates the need for GPRS connectivity required of all other push mail service. BSNL is planning to deploy BlacMail as a mass market VAS service as it does not need the mobile subscriber to have GPRS facility.
