DoT likely to auction broadband spectrum this fiscal

The Department of Telecom is looking at the possibility of carrying out another round of spectrum auctions for broadband services this fiscal.

This comes after the Finance Ministry asked the DoT to push through with the auction in a bid to raise revenues for the Government.

Trai invites bids for survey projects on broadband adoption

Telecom regulator Trai today invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for engagement of an agency for a five-year project to conduct annual surveys on adoption of broadband in India.

“Telecom regulator intends to engage ! an agency or institution or consortium of two agencies or institutions to conduct annual survey on adoption of broadband in the country. This project will involve five annual surveys for five years,” Trai said.

BSNL links fund allocations to revenue targets

The management of cash-strapped Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has decided to link future fund allocations for all 24 circles to the realisation of specific revenue targets in financial year 2011-12.

In an internal communication, BSNL chairman & managing director RK Upadhayay has directed all circle heads to go on a revenue maximisation drive, failing which fund allocations will stand frozen. Each circle head has been told to expand business on a war-footing and achieve a minimum 25% revenue growth this fiscal.

Additional spectrum to mop up Rs 80K cr

The department of telecommunications (DoT) will ask for vacation of additional 100 MHz spectrum from various ministries, including defense, which may generate Rs 80,000-crore revenues for the government if the price of 3G auction last year is taken as a base.

Pay Rs 25 lakh for services, BSNL tells RCom

A day after RCom protested disconnection of telecom services by BSNL, the Haryana circle of state-run telecom today said it has asked the Anil Ambani Group company to pay Rs 25 lakh as restoration charges to restore its telephone services in the state.

“We have demanded from RCom the payment of Rs 25 lakh, which are restoration charges and it is to be paid by RCoM as per the Interconnection User Agreement,” a senior BSNL official said today.

Pitroda, Nilekani in panel on national broadband plan

The Government has set up a high level committee, including Mr Sam Pitroda and Mr Nandan Nilekani, to monitor the implementation of the National Optic Fiber Network (NOFN) project.

Under the project, the Government is looking to lay optic fibre cable network across the country to boost broadband uptake.

Core team

BSNL plans to open new exchanges, 100 cell sites

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has planned to open three new exchanges and install 84 numbers of additional 2G cellular sites i.e., Base Transmission Stations (BTS) and 16 additional 3G cell sites.

Talking to reporters, the Principal General Manager of BSNL N. Hari Babu along with C. Sunitha – General Manager said that BSNL has the strongest cellular coverage.

TDSAT rejects Idea's plea against DoT showcause notice

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has dismissed Aditya Birla group firm Idea Cellular`s plea against Department of Telecommunications` (DoT) showcause notice, asking why its licence in Punjab circle should not be cancelled for violating merger and acquisition (M&A) norms.

The TDSAT has said that the Idea`s plea against was “premature one” and “has failed to make out a prima facie case” as the DoT was yet to take any decision on the issue.

BSNL to be split like pvt sector

Communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal wants the management of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to run the struggling state behemoth like a private company and has formulated a new structure in which frontline regional units will have heads with financial accountability. Indian GSM telecom operators added 11.10 million subscribers in April, taking the all-India GSM cellular subscriber base to 580.66 million, cellular operators` association COAI today said.

The GSM subscriber base stood at 569.55 million at the end of March, 2011, with an addition of 14.49 million.

Bharti Airtel, the largest GSM player, added 2.41 million users in April, taking its total subscriber base to 164.61 million, data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) showed. It had 28.35%  [read more →]
