Airtel commences 3G services in J&K

Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Wednesday commenced 3G services in Jammu and Kashmir , starting with the summer capital Srinagar.

“Powered by 160 sites in Srinagar alone, Airtel 3G services will gradually be launched across the state in weeks to come,” Chief Executive Officer, Upper North, Mobile service, Shashi Arora told reporters.

Vodafone pays first tranche for $5 billion Ruia`s stake

The Vodafone Group has paid its Indian partner Essar $1.9 billion, the first tranche of its $5 billion deal, to buy out Ruias`entire 33% stake in Vodafone Essar, an executive with direct knowledge of the development told ET.

Bharti Airtel launches mobile wallet service in Delhi NCR

Bharti Airtel, India`s largest telco by revenues and subscribers, launched its mobile wallet service Airtel Money in Delhi NCR on Wednesday, a company official said.

The service allows Airtel customers to make cashless payments from Rs 10 to Rs 5,000 a day for various services such as utility bills and movie tickets. The telco plans to raise the upper threshold to Rs 50,000 within two months, Airtel`s m-commerce services chief operating officer Sriram Jagannathan told! ET.

Bharti Airtel inks $400-m pact with Huawei

Bharti Airtel has signed a $400-million deal with Chinese vendor Huawei to modernize and expand Airtel`s mobile network infrastructure in Africa.

According to the agreement, Huawei will be responsible for designing, planning as well as managing operations and maintenance.

Ericsson and Nokia Siemens are also likely to get similar deals.

Tata Communications priority is to retire debt and reduce interest cost

Tata Communications, MD & CEO Vinod Kumar, who joined the company in April 2004 and took up the current position this February, has his task cut out. The company, which has a $1.4 billion debt on its books, is looking at borrowing more this year, and Kumar will have to look at retiring a part of it. BSNL plans to open new exchanges, 100 cell sites

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has planned to open three new exchanges and install 84 numbers of additional 2G cellular sites i.e., Base Transmission Stations (BTS) and 16 additional 3G cell sites.

Talking to reporters, the Principal General Manager of BSNL N. Hari Babu along with C. Sunitha – General Manager said that BSNL has the strongest cellular coverage.

To strengthen the coverage, 84 new 2G cell sites and 16 additional 3G sites are under installation.  [read more →]

Communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal wants the management of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to run the struggling state behemoth like a private company and has formulated a new structure in which frontline regional units will have heads with financial accountability. More than 60 percent of mobile workers sleep with their smartphone

The iPass Mobile Workforce Report is published quarterly and based on a survey of more than 3,700 mobile enterprise employees at 1,100 enterprises worldwide between April 1 and April 15, 2011. The iPass Mobile Workforce Report can be found at www.ipass.com/mwr

11.1 mn GSM users added in April: COAI

Indian GSM telecom operators added 11.10 million subscribers in April, taking the all-India GSM cellular subscriber base to 580.66 million, cellular operators` association COAI today said.

The GSM subscriber base stood at 569.55 million at the end of March, 2011, with an addition of 14.49 million.

Bharti Airtel, the largest GSM player, added 2.41 million users in April, taking its total subscriber base to 164.61 million, data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) showed. It had 28.35%  [read more →]
