Free SMSes may have cost BSNL crores

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) may have lost anything between a few hundred crores and several thousand crores since 2008 by not charg- ing other telcos for telephone messages or SMSes carried on its network.

SMS Trojan is a malicious program penetrates smart phones running Android in the guise of a harmless media player application. Dubbed Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, the malware is being used to ring up charges by sending text messages to premium rate numbers. According to Denis Maslennikov, senior malware researcher at Kaspersky Lab, the Trojan passes itself off as a media player named Movie Player.

# SMS (Short Message Service) is the transmission of short text messages to and from a mobile phone, or any other device capable of generating the SMS. It is composed of a maximum of 160 characters, each coded on 7 bits (GSM) or 140 bytes.
