Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation mobile cellular technology for networks based on the GSM standard. Developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project).

Etisalat crowned with three global awards

Abu Dhabi: Etisalat won three international awards at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain, last week.

UAE again delays mobile number portability

MNP mobile number portability in India

The United Arab Emirates again delayed mobile number portability on Tuesday, the chief executive of telecom operator du told reporters.

The deadline had already been extended to the end of this month and would have allowed customers of du and Etisalat to have switched operators without having to change their phone number.

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Google Inc. and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire Motorola Mobility for $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion, a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies.

ADAG group telecom company Reliance Communications (RCom) entered into tablet computer segment with launch of Android operating sytem-based Reliance 3G Tab for Rs 12,999.

“We believe the unmet demand of a fully-loaded tablet at an aggressive price point will now fuel the aspirations of the evolved customers,” Mahesh Prasad, President, RCom said in a statement.

Close on the heels of Bharti Airtel chief Sunil Mittal foregoing any pay hike this fiscal, the company on Wednesday said all its corporate directors and CEOs have volunteered for no salary hike in 2011-12.

BSNL, MTNL paid Rs 1,134 crore as rent in last 4 years

The government on Wednesday said two state-run telecos BSNL and MTNL have collectively paid Rs 1,132.06 crore in the last four years as rent for the buildings they have hired for technical and administrative offices.

MTNL has paid a total of Rs 108.16 crore since 2008 and BSNL has paid Rs 1,023.9 crore during the same period, Minister ! of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora informed the Lok Sabha.

Bharti Airtel Ltd, India`s top mobile phone carrier, on Wednesday reported a 28 percent fall in profit for the quarter ended June 30, hit by interest costs related to its purchase of African operations, costs of its new third-generation network in India and higher tax outgo.

The Government on Wednesday said two Anil Ambani companies have been fined a total of Rs 5.49 crore for shutting down rural telephone services during 2010-11 in violation of the USOF agreement.
