Urban India faces mobile glut

In Delhi, every person has two mobile connections on an average. In the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, everyone in an urban area has four mobile numbers on an average.

If you think mobile operators have a large potential market in urban India, you may be wrong, as everyone in urban India has, on an average, a mobile connection.

GSM uses a mix of Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). FDMA parts involves the division by frequency of the 25 MHz bandwidth in to 124 carrier frequencies (Also called ARFCN) spaced 200 KHz for GSM-900. Taken from the GCF Press Release, that announced that 400 different 3GPP compliant mobile phones, wireless modems and connected devices from more than 35 manufacturers achieved GCF certification in 2010…

The Global Certification Forum (GCF) announced the extension of GCF Certification to TD-LTE mobile devices that operate in the 2570-2620 MHz band.

Designated E-UTRA Band 38 by 3GPP, the 2570-2620 MHz band has been allocated for TD-LTE in a number of important markets, most notably China.

Vodafone Essar launches 3G services in Karnal, Kurukshetra

Cellular service provider-Vodafone Essar today announced the roll-out of its 3G services in Karnal and Kurukshetra. Vodafone 3G mobile and data services will offer its customers a faster, smarter and better mobile experience with internet access at speeds up to 21.1 Mbps at their finger tips.

Airtel commences 3G services in J&K

Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Wednesday commenced 3G services in Jammu and Kashmir , starting with the summer capital Srinagar.

“Powered by 160 sites in Srinagar alone, Airtel 3G services will gradually be launched across the state in weeks to come,” Chief Executive Officer, Upper North, Mobile service, Shashi Arora told reporters.

Tata Communications priority is to retire debt and reduce interest cost

Tata Communications, MD & CEO Vinod Kumar, who joined the company in April 2004 and took up the current position this February, has his task cut out. The company, which has a $1.4 billion debt on its books, is looking at borrowing more this year, and Kumar will have to look at retiring a part of it. BSNL plans to open new exchanges, 100 cell sites

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has planned to open three new exchanges and install 84 numbers of additional 2G cellular sites i.e., Base Transmission Stations (BTS) and 16 additional 3G cell sites.

Talking to reporters, the Principal General Manager of BSNL N. Hari Babu along with C. Sunitha – General Manager said that BSNL has the strongest cellular coverage.

To strengthen the coverage, 84 new 2G cell sites and 16 additional 3G sites are under installation.  [read more →]

TDSAT rejects Idea's plea against DoT showcause notice

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has dismissed Aditya Birla group firm Idea Cellular`s plea against Department of Telecommunications` (DoT) showcause notice, asking why its licence in Punjab circle should not be cancelled for violating merger and acquisition (M&A) norms.

The TDSAT has said that the Idea`s plea against was “premature one” and “has failed to make out a prima facie case” as the DoT was yet to take any decision on the issue.
