Cash crunch cramps STel

Mobile operator STel is finding it difficult to provide “connectivity” to its customers as its network vendors have started disconnecting services over non-payment of dues.

The telecom service provider, which is 49 per cent owned by Bahrain Telecom (Batelco), has been unable to pay its network vendors over the last few months because of a cash crunch.

Etisalat DB`s international long-distance telephony plan is in trouble with security agencies yet to give clearance to the company for setting up gateways in the country.

Intelligence agencies have raised security concerns about Etisalat DB`s parent company – the UAE-based Emirates Telecommunications Corp.

This comes even as the company`s mobile licences are under the scanner for alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scam.

TDSAT dismisses Idea Cellular plea challenging DoT show-cause notices

Telecom tribunal TDSAT has dismissed the petitions filed by Idea Cellular challenging the show-cause notices issued by the government on merger of Spice Communication with the Aditya Birla group firm.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) will shortly invite bids from all mobile phone companies to roll out networks across the country`s naxal-infested territories! to bring the multitude of left wing ultras in the cellular loop.

Telecom minister Kapil Sibal decides to send notices to 74 telecom firms, overrules DoT`s view

In a major departure from his ministry`s stand, telecom minister Kapil Sibal has decided to issue show-cause notices to 74 licensees that failed to meet roll-out obligations. While telecom regulator Trai and the Department of Telecom had locked horns on this issue with the latter disagreeing with former`s recommendations, Sibal has decided to overrule DoT`s view.

Reliance Communications units merger to render 700 staff jobless

Reliance Communications, India`s second largest telco by subscribers, is merging its three business divisions, a move that will make about 10% of its 7,000 executives redundant and result in redeployment of another 2,000 employees to `field functions`.

US moves to block AT&T’s T-Mobile deal

The U.S. government on Wednesday sued to block AT&T Inc’s $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA, citing concerns it will harm competition in the wireless market and lead to higher prices.

The surprise move, which was the biggest antitrust challenge yet by the Obama administration, caught the carriers by surprise and if successful would end AT&T’s move to unseat Verizon Wireless as the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier.

Rejig of operations helps Airtel regain revenue market share

Having consistently lost revenue market share over the last two years, Bharti Airtel has now gained back some lost ground.

The country`s largest mobile services operator, by revenue and subscriber base, clocked a revenue market! share of 30.8% of the Indian telecom market, a gain of 60 basis points (0.6%) during the April- June quarter against the three months ended March 2011.

Etisalat appoints Ahmad Julfar as group CEO

Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar has been appointed as the new group chief executive officer of the UAE`s Etisalat company, it was announced on Wednesday.

The appointment comes as part of a new expansion phase that will see Etisalat strengthen its position globally.

Julfar joined Etisalat i! n 1986 and has played several roles till he became its chief operating officer in 2006.
