Etisalat appoints Ahmad Julfar as group CEO

Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar has been appointed as the new group chief executive officer of the UAE`s Etisalat company, it was announced on Wednesday.

The appointment comes as part of a new expansion phase that will see Etisalat strengthen its position globally.

Julfar joined Etisalat i! n 1986 and has played several roles till he became its chief operating officer in 2006.

BSNL to rope in staff family members to boost sales

In bid to increase its revenues, state-run telecom major BSNL is launching a scheme under which family members of its 2.9 lakh employees can sell mobile recharge coupons as direct selling agents for a commission of 4.5 per cent, a senior company official said.

MTNL has announced the upgradation of its 3G/ UMTS users to 3.5G HSDPA, which provides a download speed of 3.6 Mbps, according to a report by Telecom Talk.Post your opinion here

MTNL raises Rs 500 cr from banks to repay debts

State-owned telecom major MTNL today said it has raised Rs 500 crore from various banks that will be used to repay debts and meet operational expenses.

“Out of the total loan amount of Rs 1,500 crore, we have raised Rs 500 crore from various banks and for the rest of the amount, we are still in talks with the them (banks),” MTNL Chairman and Managing Director Kuldip Singh said on the sidelines of an event.

Steve Jobs steps down as Apple Chief Executive

Apple said on Wednesday that Steven P. Jobs, its co-founder and chief executive, would step down. Tim Cook, the chief operating officer, will take over the position.

DoT readying notice to cancel Etisalat DB`s licenses

The Department of Telecom is readying show-cause notices to cancel 13 licenses issued to Etisalat DB (earlier Swan Telecom) for allegedly acting as a front company to Reliance Communications.

While both Etisalat DB and Reliance Communications have denied the link-up, the DoT`s licensing wing has prepared a draft notice, which is being vetted by its legal department before issuing it to the company.

ZTE makes India its global hub for technical manpower

Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corporation on Thursday announced it has established India as the company`s global experts resource hub.

As the global resource hub, ZTE India, a wholly owned subsidiary of ZTE Corporation, will serve as a key technical resource provider for ZTE`s operations and subsidiaries in other countries as the company continues to scale up its global growth.

Motorola Mobility posts $56m Q2 loss

Motorola Mobility swung to a $56 million loss in the second quarter despite climbing sales, while Motorola Solutions benefited from the sale of its network assets to NSN.

The company said mobile device revenue grew 41% to $2.4 billion, with the company shipping 4.4 million smartphones and 440,000 tablets during the quarter.

The mobile device segment helped lift overall revenue 28% to $3.3 billion, despite nearly flat set-top box sales.

Alca-Lu turnaround underwhelms analysts

Alcatel-Lucent finally turned revenue growth into hard profits during 2Q11, overturning a run of net losses with a profit of €43 million ($61.5 million).

The figure overturns losses of €184 million in 2Q10 and €10 million in 1Q11, and is enough for the vendor to confirm full-year targets of operating margin above 5% of 2011 sales, chief Ben Verwaayen said. The firm’s margin in 2Q11 hit 1.9% – down from 2.4% in 2Q10
